The Hofstra Chronicle Social Media Guide:

As we’ve continued to increase our digital footprint more and more issues need to be stated and worked out so as to prevent ambiguity for our readers and for our writers and editors. Social media and everything that comes with it can be tricky for publications attempting to generate unbiased, even-handed content. So what follows is a guide to prevent any misunderstanding on our part as to how we see the social media offshoots for our publication.

Facebook: To share and interact with the vast Hofstra community active on Facebook and to better deliver the news for our readers’ news-aggregator of choice.

Twitter: A tool for both better linking and aggregating our articles using Twitter’s metadata (such as hashtags and trending topics). It is also used by our A&E (@HuChronBsection) and Sports (@HuChronSports) departments as a liveblogging tool for coverage and up-to-the-minute criticism.

Youtube: Our Youtube Channel is divided into three playlists, News, Sports, and Entertainment to make the type of coverage presented clear for our viewers. Our ethical approach for each channel follows the guidelines of their section, i.e. opinion and criticism for entertainment, etc.

Moderating our comment boards: We are a learning-newspaper for students. There are two different ideas about message boards, to heavily moderate dissenting opinion or to let it be a free-for-all. Here at The Chronicle we believe open, fair, and unmoderated opinion as the best way for us as a staff to become stronger. We don’t ever advocate hateful, rude, or unconstructive speech on our comments but as a public forum for the Hofstra community we accept both the pros and cons that come with that.
