Club finds only half of emergency phones
Women of Action (WOA), the University women's advocacy group, recently conducted an on-foot search for emergency telephones on campus.
"WOA has always been concerned with how few emergency blue lights there are on our campus, and we have been looking for ways to raise awareness about this for years," said Cheryl Curry, a senior English major and member of Women of Action.
Spitzer proposes issuing undocumented immigrants licenses
Gov. Elliot Spitzer is leading the way in New York State to give everyone who lives there-legally or not-the ability to obtain a driver's license, but not without flack from both sides of the political spectrum after compromising due to national pressure.
The federal government allows states to make their own decisions regarding driver's licenses, and in this case, whether a license can be given to an individual who is not a legal resident.
Campus ONE campaign wins second challenge
The University chapter of the ONE Campaign, an organization that aims to help Americans raise their voice as one unified group against the emergency of AIDS and extreme poverty, won the third weekly campus challenge last week. This is the second time the University club has won a challenge.
39,000 runners compete in annual Marathon
It was a close race from start to finish between top women athletes Paula Radcliffe and Gete Wami in Wednesday's annual New York Marathon. Radcliffe, of Great Britain, maintained her lead throughout the course, with Wami, of Ethiopia, close behind. Radcliffe pulled ahead in the last few minutes of the race to cross the finish line 23 seconds before Wami.
Radio operators work to reunite families post-race
For the 2007 ING New York Marathon, the safety and welfare of every athlete involved was the highest priority. Amateur radio experts (hams) positioned throughout the course played a key role in assuring a smooth event for each person involved.
"We had a mission and we fulfilled that mission very well," said Steve Mendelsohn, the director of communications for the race.
County election results reveal no surprises
On an election day where voter turnout was light, Democrats struggled to hold onto their narrow 10-9 majority in the Nassau County Legislature, the spotlight focused on the tightest race of the night in the 14th District between Legis. Dave Mejias and Joseph Belesi.
Blood drive falls short of desired donations
Although the yearly goal of 1000 pints of blood was not met during the Oct. 31 blood drive, the University was pleased with the results, which nearly brought the year's count up to the total for 2006.
"Everybody was very pleased," Peter Libman, the dean of students, said.
Attendance policy for SGA refined
The Student Government Association passed the majority of a proposal on Tuesday to further define sections of the constitution dealing with the Student Business Organization Board (SBOB), the Ethics and Conduct chair and general attendance for senators.
The Ethics and Conduct proposal involved three categories of change.
Hillel members gather to remember Kristallnacht
Nearly 69 years ago in Germany, Rachel Gleitman woke up to the smell of ash and burning flesh from factories outside her window. She slept packed in barracks with 22 other people in one room, eating nothing but one bowl of watery soup per day, and wearing only one piece of tattered clothing.
